Wombat Cake from the Women’s Weekly Cake cookbook
This year we are running our annnual Bushcare Bake Off!
The cake competition will take place at the Bushcare and Landcare Picnic held on Saturday 30th August at Sun Valley Reserve. Everyone is welcome to show off their culinary talents and be in the running for a secret prize!
The theme this year is “mutually beneficial relationships” as Bushcare and Natural Area Management at Council is a great example of mutually beneficial relationships over a long time.
Mutually beneficial relationships can be small, medium or large to form a network of interactions that can promote resilience. An example of a mutually beneficial relationship which may inspire you is the symbiosis between an Acacia and the Rhizobium bacteria in its root nodules. Rhizobium converts atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen the plant can use. Dormant Acacia seeds often germinate after disturbance such as fire and this “succession” can facilitate conditions that encourage longer lived “perennial” trees and shrubs. Perennial trees such as Eucalypts eventually form hollows for arboreal fauna.
The cakes will be judged by you, and votes counted. A winner will be announced at 13:30pm.
Let your culinary creativity go crazy!
